What is Writing Studies

A degree in Writing Studies prepares you for the future in ways that no other degree can, offering you the flexibility to choose half of the courses you will take to fit your personal interests, to build on your strengths, and to help you acquire new skills.

An emphasis in Writing Studies invites you to explore and and practice the ways in which writing--and by extension, literacy, language, and rhetoric-- function in society. What we call writing is constantly evolving to meet the needs and adapt to the technologies of the times and places writing is used. Writing creates art; enables commerce, communication, justice, and celebration; and in countless ways defines the human experience.

With this emphasis in writing studies, you will learn about and experience a broad range of ways to use writing--from technical and professional writing to creative writing –-and you will gain a theoretical and historical grounding in rhetoric and modern writing studies.

Beyond that foundation, you may create your own path through the coursework to meet your personal goals, in any profession, career, or life journey.
